أهلُّI appear عليكمbefore you بالتحيّاتwith salutations والحمدِand praise
From the heavenly assembly, from the realm of eternity,
From the highest realm of the eternal world
I appear before you with salutations and praise.
I greet you with salutations and praise
تقحمتُI broke through حُجبthe veils الغيبof the unseen حتىuntil أتيتكمI came to you
لأجزيكمto repay you عنfor بعضsome of إحسانكمyour kindness عنديtoward me
I broke through the veils of the unseen until I came to you,
I penetrated the veils of the unseen until I reached you
To repay you for some of your kindness toward me.
To reward you for some of your kindness towards me

منof اللوحthe ether يفنىperishes البعدdistance فيهin it منfrom البعدِdistance
I crossed the bounds of 'where' through a vast stretch
I crossed the boundaries of where in willful ambition
Of ether, where distance perishes from sheer distance.
In it, distance vanishes from distance
كأنas though الفضاءspace اللانهائيinfinite سائرٌmoving
علىupon كرةٍa sphere لاno حدَّboundary فيهاin it سوىexcept حدّيmy boundary
As though infinite space were moving
As if infinite space is walking
Upon a sphere with no boundary but my own.
On a sphere that has no limit but my limit

تشابهlooked alike ماwhat قبليahead of me عليّto me وماand what بعديbehind me
Whenever I quickened my pace through its wastes,
When I raced walking in its wastelands
What lay ahead of me and what lay behind me looked alike to me.
What was before me resembled what was after me

إليهنtoward them عطفيmy affection غيرbut أنْthat لسنthey were not منpart of قصديmy purpose
Until I passed beyond the stars, which drew
Until I surpassed the stars gravitational pull
My affection toward them, though they were not my goal.
To them my affection, though they weren't my intent

Their tongue implores me—and light is there—
They implore me - and the light then - in their language
To recite my poetry to them and offer them my sincere love.
To recite my poetry to them, befriend them

وبغدادand Baghdad لمnot أبخلI withhold عليهاfrom them بماwith what عنديin my possession
Had Egypt and Jilliq not been my love,
Had it not been for Egypt and my passionate love
And Baghdad, I would not have withheld from them what I have.
And Baghdad, I wouldn't have been stingy with what I have
معانٍmeanings قضىfulfilled فيهاin them الشبابyouth مآربيmy desires
وسلّتand unsheathed بهاin them كبرىthe greatest العزائمresolves إفرنديmy sword's steel
Meanings in which youth fulfilled my desires,
Meanings in which youth spent its most precious time
And there the greatest resolves unsheathed my steel.
And the greatest resolves ran wild in me
وأمليتُand I dictated فيهاin them الدهرTime غرّthe brightest قصائديmy odes
فغنىso it sang بهاwith them الأجيالthe generations فيin السهلthe plain والنجدِand the upland
And there I dictated my brightest odes to Time,
And I dictated to fate the pride of my poems
So it sang them to generations on the plain and upland.
Which generations sang in the plains and highlands

فمنso who لمتىfor 'when' (time) ماwhich بينناbetween us قامhas risen كالسدِّlike a dam
I crossed the bounds of 'where' until I reached you;
I crossed the boundaries of where until I reached you
Yet who can overcome 'when,' which has risen between us like a dam?
So who put up what was between us like a dam?

فلولاso if only سبقتمyou had come earlier أوor تأخّرَhad come later بيfor me عهديmy time
Yes, a thousand years stood between me and you.
Yes, a thousand years stood between me and you
If only you had come earlier, or my time had come later,
Had I not preceded or you followed after my time

I would have rejoiced to meet you, and you would have been fortunate to see me,
I would have delighted in meeting you and you in seeing me
Had the hand of fate erased it from the reckoning.
If only the hand of fate had voided it in the count

يريدwills فلاso not تقوىare strong enough الجبالthe mountains علىto صدّيstop me
Come, then, make way, O Time, for a poet
Come now time, make way for a poet
Who wills, and so the mountains cannot bar my way.
Who wants to pass and mountains cannot stop my advance
أغرّكhas it deceived you? أنّthat الأرضthe earth قدindeed شربتdrank دميmy blood؟
وأنّand that عيونthe eyes الشهبof the shooting stars قدindeed شهدتwitnessed لحديmy grave؟
Has it deceived you that the earth has drunk my blood?
Did it deceive you that the earth drank my blood?
And that the eyes of the shooting stars have witnessed my grave?
And the eyes of meteors witnessed my end?
رويدكtake your time قدindeed خلّدتُI immortalized فيin الشعرpoetry محضهits pure essence

ولمand not يبقremains منهof it للترابfor the dust سوىexcept الدُرديthe dregs
Not so fast: I have immortalized its pure essence in poetry,
Gently, I immortalized poetry itself
And nothing of it remains for the dust but the dregs.
And nothing of it remains for dust but the beads

إلىto ابنٍa son .. إلىto ابنٍa son .. منfrom أبيهhis father .. منfrom الجدِّthe grandfather
So here it is, flowing clear through the generations,
There it flows in generations, pure
To a son ... to a son ... from his father ... from the grandfather.
To a son.. To a grandson.. From his father.. From his ancestors

لوif only أنthat حُميّاthe heady force الخمرof wine تهديcould guide كماas يهديit guides
It grows in potency with the days, like wine,
It increases over days like wine in delight
If only wine's heady force could guide as my poetry guides.
If only the zealotry of wine would guide like it guides

I am the immortal who courses through his people's nerves,
I am the immortal flowing in my people's veins
And his people are neither few nor meek of cheek.
And my people are not trivial or submissive
