وَيَومَand on the day of مَمَرٍّMamarr حَمَيتُI defended لَقائِحيmy milch-camels
وَضَنئِيَand my offspring عَنagainst جُعفٍJuʿf وَمازِنِand Mazin
And on the day of Mamarr I defended my milch-camels,
And one day at Marmar's pass I defended my tribe,
and my offspring, against Juʿf and Mazin.
And disdained Juf and Mazin.
وَأَوَّلَنيand saved me صَبريmy steadfastness وَمُهرٌand a colt قَصَرتُهُI reserved it
عَلىfor الدَرءِdefense مِنin exchange for خَودِa fine young she-camel الصَفاياthe choice milch-camels العَواطِنِresting by the water
My steadfastness saved me, and a colt I had reserved
My patience encouraged me at first, and a sword I shortened
for defense, in exchange for a young one of the choice milch-camels resting by the water.
For parrying the polished Indian blades.
فَخابواso they failed وَماbut not إِنindeed (emphasizing negation) خابَfailed مِنfrom دَمِthe blood of خَيرِهِمtheir best
شِباةُthe point of مِتَلٍّa stout spear فيin يَمينِيَmy right hand مارِنِsupple
So they failed, but the blood of their best did not elude
So they failed, and no drop of their best blood was shed
the point of a stout, supple spear in my right hand.
But my straight sword in my right hand shed it.
