If you see my head brought low by

the ravages of a ruinous age of reversals,

till it has bent the shaft of my back

and turbaned my head in a grizzled hue,

I still resolve a crisis whenever

its champions recoil, myself holding fast to fierce resolve.

And I cross the trackless waste, taking comfort

in a great she-camel, hardy and powerful,

while night, like the sea, is clothed

underneath in a hue like that of dark cloth.

And time's vicissitudes spare not even

a she-ibex with her kid on a towering, hard-rocked peak.

Truly the sons of Awd—what men they are,

for war or for drought in an unyielding year!

They shield their neighbors within their bounds

with wealth and lives against every hardship.

My life for them when the lances shatter,

and every rival has fallen slain!

Worthy are you to be ransomed when a dust-cloud

drags its hem over us, bringing dire calamity.

Awd has done well, and there has been no faltering

by Madhhij in striking kidneys and heads,

when at al-Khabth they beheld a surging host,

advancing in measured steps as a bride advances,

when Adwan mustered there, true to

its pledges, both leader and led,

    among Red Mudar, not leaving

a single soul save the women sitting at home.

Their own fool had deceived them, so they turned

from his counsel when they turned back scowling.

And the people bolted like ostriches

away from us; we returned with precious plunder:

many a fair-skinned woman of Kinana,

or a tall, full-figured maiden of Bakr,

or a noble, sleek mare, fed on milk,

or a massive stud-camel amid his herd,

or a captive bound in rawhide, surrendered,

or a disheveled man in need, despairing,

walking among the camels in submission,

in his rawhide bonds, with a tottering camel's gait.

As though they were a great charging host

around a chief holding fast to the chief.

For a man, what one night sets right

with good fortune, nights of ill fortune undo.

Seeking does not bring good fortune,

nor does a restive beast's kicking banish evil.

In a trackless waste where there is no human

sound, nor the faintest trace of anyone,

its wolf does not startle a lamb,

nor do human watering-pools alarm its water-carrying camels.

Below it are birds, and above it

gusts of wind, like the bulk of al-Qalis.

Tell the sons of Awd: they did well

    yesterday, striking heads beneath helmets.

Nor the waste-dweller with four hooves

like pebbles, grazing mingled, dried herbage,

treading the boulders with their like,

    set upon a lean shank,

    leaving the coat stained crimson

with deep-red, clotted blood from the belly.
