أَلا أَبلِغا عَنّي الخَليفَةَ أَنَّنا

أَلا أَبلِغا عَنّي الخَليفَةَ أَنَّنا

غَلَبنا عَلى نِصفِ السَوادِ الأَكاسِرا

غَلَبنا عَلى نِصفِ السَوادِ الأَكاسِرا

Listen—both of you, tell the caliph on my behalf that we

Lo, you two, tell the caliph on my behalf that we

wrested half of al-Sawad from the Khosrows;

wrested half the Sawād from the Khosrows.

غَلَبنا عَلى ماءِ الفُراتِ وَأَرضِهِ

غَلَبنا عَلى ماءِ الفُراتِ وَأَرضِهِ

عَشِيَّةَ جِزنا بِالسُيوفِ الأَكابِرا

عَشِيَّةَ جِزنا بِالسُيوفِ الأَكابِرا

we gained mastery of the Euphrates’ water and its land,

We took control of the Euphrates' waters and its land

on the evening we came with mighty swords.

on the evening we cut down the grandees with swords.

فَدَرَّت عَلَينا جِزيَةُ القَومِ بَعدَ ما

ضَرَبناهُمُ ضَرباً يَعُطُّ الشَوابِرا

ضَرَبناهُمُ ضَرباً يَعُطُّ الشَوابِرا

Then the people’s tribute poured in upon us, after

So the people's tribute flowed to us, after

we struck them a blow that split their jaws.
