That evening I left al-Ḥalīs as though
In the evening I left my companion as though
his upper chest bore the coloring of a richly patterned cloak.
On his neck was the color of embroidered silk
جَمَعتُI brought together لهfor him كَفّيmy two hands بِلَدنٍwith a supple spear يَزينُهُadorns it

سِنانٌ كَمِصباحِ الدُجى المتسعَرِ
Against him, I clasped both hands around a supple spear, adorned
I gathered in my palms a spear that adorns him
with a spearhead like a blazing lamp in the darkness.
With teeth like lamps illuminating the darkness
فَلَمso I did not أَرقِهِcast a healing charm over him إِنif يَنجُhe escapes منهاfrom it وَإِنand if يَمُتhe dies

فَطعنة لا غَسٍّ وَلا بمغمَّرِ
If he survives it, I cast no healing charm over him; and if he dies,
Whether he survives it or dies, I do not care
it was a thrust by no weakling, nor by a novice.
A clean stab, no poison, and no dagger
