Your eyes hold what has reclaimed my being;
Your eyes regained my being
So have we met somewhere before this?
Did we meet before in some place?

قبلَ اللقا، قد يلتقي الطيفانِ
My eyes?! I do not know whether we have, but
My eyes! I know not but
Before the meeting, the two phantoms may meet.
Before meeting, two ghosts may meet

قدرٌ هيَ الدُّنيا على الإنسانِ
As for coincidence, I do not believe in it;
As for coincidence, I don’t believe in it
This world is fate laid upon humankind.
Fate controls people’s lives
وكماand just as احتواناembraced us الدهرُtime، مَزّقtore apart غيرَناothers besides us

And just as time embraced us, it tore others apart;
And as time embraced us, it tore others apart
So let us be content with the present its bounty gives.
So let’s be content with its present generosity

محكومةٌ كالشمسِ بالدورانِ
You have spoken only the truth; indeed, our life
You spoke nothing but the truth, our lives
Is governed, like the sun, by rotation.
Are destined like the sun’s orbit

And our worries in this reality
That, like its rulers, has two faces.
That governs us, are two-faced

We pursue a thing as long as we live; then, if
We strive after things all our lives, and if
We attain it, we lose interest in it seconds later.
We attain them, we become indifferent in moments

Running is our cruelest killer—
This running is most severely murderous
The running of mortals across a perishing existence.
The race to vanishing existence

And I suffer from women and their closeness!
And I suffer from women and their proximity!

Where is that on which I squandered my feelings,
Where is that in which I destroyed my feelings
So it could live within me in comfort and safety?
To live in comfort and safety?

Here I am: I have lost half my poems
This is me, I wasted half my poems
While striving for a speck of reassurance.
As I try to gain a speck of reassurance

How long shall I display joy, while my smile
Until when do I feign happiness, while my smile
Holds all that it holds of sorrow?
Hides the sadness in it?

الأنثى تُحطِّمُ أضلُعَ الولهانِ
I did not seek this world for it to break me, as
I did not ask for this world, to break me
A woman shatters the ribs of a lovesick man.
Like a female shatters the ribs of the infatuated

When I fell, I looked; I saw no one compassionate,
When I fell, I looked and saw no sympathizer
But I saw the gloating of close friends!
But I saw the gloating of backbiters!

My chaste wishes warn you about me
Not because I was unable to attain them, nor because I was remiss.
Not incapable of them, nor hesitant

I realized, albeit late, that contentment
I realized, even if late, that acceptance
Is the drowning person's rope and the source of solace.
Is the drowning man’s rope, and comforter of pensiveness

And I won myself back when I accepted my pains,
And you granted me when I accepted my affliction
So I gave my heart rest, and my tongue rested.
So I calmed my heart, and my tongue rested

For all the disappointment I faced,
From all the disappointment I faced
True consolation lay in the Qur'an.
The true consolation was in the Quran

As for my heart, it belongs to my eloquence.
As for my heart, it is the kingdom of my expression

Kisra would have wept blood over the Iwan.
He would cry blood on the palace’s threshold

Hide it within me for fear of deprivation.
In me, fearing deprivation
