You keep giving what gratitude cannot encompass,

Nor can time do it justice with praise of You.

So where can I go with such kindness, when I am

Bound by sins for which there is no excuse?

You are the proof of what You have created,

Even if the mind imagines what cannot be understood.

And a sign of You is that the earth is powerless

To bear a tenth of what the breast may bear!

We live, O Lord, in a world without honor,

For every sweet thing in it is bitter to attain.

We walk in fear: the waves do not accept us,

Nor does the open sky, nor does the land welcome us.

Surely You know better than we do, O our Teacher,

What we feel; and from You come goodness and goodness.

If unbelief had an opinion, like those who disbelieved,

And were it freed of them, unbelief would believe!

O Lord, they have taken their fill from me—

These worries; and the secret has become public.

No—by Your might—my hopes have not ceased,

But I have been afflicted with what patience could not bear.

By God, but for what You know, there would have remained

My soul upon a tear, O You to whom command belongs.

'When will relief come?' Do not ask: relief has already come.

Before long, ease will sweep hardship away.

Indeed, tension does not save us, nor does anxiety,

From what we suffer; but dawn does.
