    فيكفيكِ تشريداً بنا ومُكابَرَة

    You cannot kill what we lived through;

So enough of casting us adrift and stubborn defiance.

You blame the events of time, though they

Are blameless—for we are the sin: a tyrant and a rebel.

And to meet as equals after battles,

On half a truce—there is some risk in that.

I do not want a concession from you now,

But for you to stay without it being a gamble.

I am tired of hiding what I feel, and of being seen

As settled, when nothing is in me but a traveling soul.

And here are a thousand armies of sorrow within my ribs,

Stronger and more ruthless than the armies of the Khosrows.

Ask disappointments about me—how often I have met them,

Dragging my foolishness while they laugh mockingly!

    فلي أُسوةٌ بالحقِّ يُبغضُ كافرَة

    And about my hatred of the world and my detachment from its people;

For Truth is my example: it hates a disbeliever.

Without a homeland, all lands live within me,

And my heart is a friend to migratory birds.

And whoever lives in exile—his eyes sleep,

While tragedies and calamities remain awake.

If the first life, despite its vastness, closes in on me,

And withholds what I hope for, then there is an afterlife.

I spent my journey mending hearts,

And I have a beating heart that God consoles.

God be with you, O heart, so constricted that there burst forth

Its calamities as poetry that comforts its poet.

We met what we fear, and received our share,

And fate spread its destinies on either side of us.

Ocean after ocean, clinging to a straw,

We search the coffin for a quarter of a steamship.

On the bench of the waves, our life passed by,

So welcome to helplessness, which drowns whoever crosses it!

And were it not for You, O God, we would have ventured down our paths

To death willingly, unafraid of its graves.

And were it not for You, despair would better suit our condition

Than patience, which still conceals its glad tidings.

And were it not for You, our strength would not have endured and fought on,

While all the feelings around it were flagging.

And were it not for You, were our hope not in You,

No loser among us would love his losses!

Where to, O you? Listen to me, for I have said nothing

Of the grief I lived through, except the last of it.

In short, what my heart wants is to withdraw

From war, even if peace were an adventure.

If you choose the death of two whose life you were,

Then I beg you: leave no memory behind you.
