حسدواthey envied عليكِfor having you أبيmy father فضاقَso he was distressed سنيناfor years
وعليكِand for having you نحنُwe بنيكِyour sons.. كمhow often حسدوناthey envied us
They envied my father for having you, so he was distressed for years.
They envied you, my father, so our years narrowed,
And us, your sons—how often they envied us for having you!
And we, your children, how much they envy us!
قدindeed كادَnearly يُفنيناconsume us لهيبُthe blaze عيونهمtheir eyes
لكنَّهُمbut they ياO أُمِMother مَعذوروناare excused!
The blaze of their eyes nearly consumed us,
The blaze of their eyes almost destroyed us,
But, Mother, they are excused!
But they, O mother, we pardon them!
رأوواthey saw الذيthat which لمdid not تحتملهُbear it قلوبُهمtheir hearts
مماof what خُصصتِyou were singled out بهِfor it، وهُمwhile they يرجوناthey hope
They saw what their hearts could not bear
They saw what their hearts could not bear
Of what you were singled out to receive, while they hope for it.
Of what you were endowed with, though they hoped for it.
فكأنَّso it is as though أنفُسَهُمtheir souls نصوصٌtexts حُرِّفتwere distorted
وكأنّand as though روحكِyour soul ترتديwears ياسيناYa-Sin
So it is as though their souls are texts that have been distorted,
So it's as if their souls were texts distorted,
And as though your soul wears Ya-Sin.
And as if your soul is clad in jasmine.
