How can you survive life and be content?
How can you be happy with life, when
Most of those around you are sick!
Most of this ocean around you is sick!

You are in the trap, so smile! You do not know
You're trapped, so smile! You don't know
that some torment settles the matter more decisively.
That some suffering is for the best.

O my waiting—and you know my soul best—
Oh my hope, you know my soul better,
from loss to defeat to chaos.
From loss to defeat and chaos.

God alone knows how many walls
God alone knows how many walls
behind my heart want to collapse!
Behind my heart want to crumble!

Time changed its skin, and so we were afflicted
Time changed its skin, so we were afflicted
with an age resounding with rancor and hatred.
With an era brimming with hatred and grudges.

Where is my love? And how was it lost? And what
Where is my love? How did it get lost?
of my country and its glory, when it passed away?
And what about my country and its glory when it overflowed?

وزمانٌand a time مضىhas passed ولاand does not يتَقَضّىend!
Wounds have devoured me, O my cousin,
The wounds consumed me, cousin,
and a time that has passed, yet never ends!
And time passed by, unfinished!

And despite the sorrow in my veins,
And despite the sorrow in my veins,
there is something that binds my parts together.
Something pulls parts of me together.

I now seek an honorable enemy,
I'm looking now for an honorable enemy!
who shows no favoritism and does not violate honor;
One who doesn't show favoritism or violate dignity,

for pledges made by an Arab leader
Who remembers the pacts of an Arab leader
that he has not betrayed, and that have tasted no breach from him;
Who never betrayed them or tasted betrayal from him.

for an age that is more just in judgment
One from a time of more just rule
among peoples humiliated, whether raised up or brought low;
Among nations raised and lowered.

for lands whose blood flowed as ablution-water,
A country whose blood was purification,
not lands that perform ablutions with their own urine!
Not a country that purifies itself with urine!

The game of chance is a game I never played,
The game of fortune is a game I never joined,
and like my people, I spent my life running.
And like my people, I spent my life running.

I have shaken both hands free of every love,
I have shaken my hands free of every love,
but the heart within me is still tender.
But my heart still holds them dear.

Life taught me, after years,
Life taught me after years
that the sweetest thing in life is refusal.
That the sweetest life is what I refused.

There is still something in me that says: You will be content.
Something in me still says: You will be happy
My Lord, grant me a pulse for what I hope for.
With what I hope to pulse.
