After they departed, they left nothing of you.

What did you do to them that they went away from you?

By God, nothing—but I used to tell them

that life far from them was wretched!

I spent my lifetime waiting, and they never returned.

Where are the stars that—? They put those out.

No, I have not complained, nor do I complain to any mortal.

What lies within the ribs is lamented to none but God!

I stayed among them for years, never opposing them,

until they exchanged their faith for doubt.

My precious tears they dishonored with their coldness,

and the veil between us was torn away.

Today I accept no excuses, even if they are true.

No—not when my dreams have been utterly crushed within me.

The presence of someone you keep out of affection

is, by God, deadlier than his desertion!

All I hoped for from our endings

was to spare blood, but they persisted in shedding it!

What we lived through cannot be forgotten, despite the claims

of our souls to victory; our souls are ruined.

    نواجهُ الفَرْحَ دمعاً، والأسى ضِحْكا

    The expression on our faces no longer resembles us;

we face joy with tears, and sorrow with laughter.

As though we were fish, and the Sabbath had reassured us,

and memories were Jews who had hidden the nets!

If you opened my heart now, you would find nothing in it

but what wounds the ears if told.

My heart, the novelist, is a sea when it elegizes someone,

yet in its storytelling it cannot master the plot!

It never chose a wish without receiving an echo

of luck, shouting: 'No—leave this one alone!'

    أمّا الحظوظُ، فدوماً تقتُلُ الأذكى

    Such is life: it opposes whoever defies it;

as for fortunes, they always kill the cleverest.

    هذا التَبَلُّدُ في أعماقنا أنكى!

    No wind is beneath me, nor have I suffered anxiety;

this numbness deep within us is more wounding!

And whoever reassures his souls with dreams,

you will find that, in the real world, he has met ruin.

So, O you slain by wishes in my imagination,

I am not Imru' al-Qays, that I should seek kingship.

By what you left for it, not what you reaped through it—

for you will not live unless you grow used to letting go.

If this sorrow could be quenched by a weeping eye,

time would restore to humankind what is wept over.

And sorrow is the most godless creature, bodiless:

it has never fasted a day, nor prayed, nor given alms.

I worship God alone, while hopes ascribe partners to Him!

I love my Lord, who does not forgive associating partners with Him.

I was created smiling, yet I weep! For every joy

I entrusted with my heart murdered it—or nearly did.

The taste of my triumph over my self and its craving,

or peace as a way of life—which of them is purer?

I was not Noah, nor did the flood extend a hand,

and God revealed: 'Do not build the ark.'
