تمتَّعenjoy بالقليلِwith the little إذاif; when المَزيدُmore
لعلَّperhaps الخيرَgoodness فيin ماwhat لاnot تُريدُyou want
Enjoy the little—if more...
Enjoy the little, if more—
Perhaps goodness lies in what you do not desire.
perhaps good lies in what you do not want.
قطعتَyou crossed الجوَّthe sky مُلتمِساًseeking هبوطاًa landing
ومثلُكَand one like you أنتَyou ديدَنُهُhis habit الصّعودُascent!
You crossed the sky seeking a descent,
You crossed the sky seeking a landing,
yet one such as you—you are ever bent on ascent!
yet one like you is accustomed to ascent!
فلاso do not تحزنgrieve إذاwhen الدّنياthe world تولّتْturns away
ولاand do not تفرحْrejoice بماin what منهاfrom it يجودُgives generously
So do not grieve when the world turns away,
So do not grieve when the world turns away,
nor rejoice in whatever it bestows.
nor rejoice in what it bestows.
تَعزّtake solace بماin what خسرتَyou lost فرُبَّfor many a خُسرٍloss
عليكَto you بكلِّwith every نافعةٍbenefit يعودُreturns
Take heart in what you have lost, for many a loss
Take solace in what you lost, for many a loss
returns to you laden with every benefit.
returns to you with every benefit.
أحاولُI try أنto أكونbe صديقَa friend to نفسيmyself
ولكنّيbut I علىtoward نفسيmyself شديدُharsh
I try to be a friend to myself,
I try to be a friend to myself,
yet I am harsh toward myself.
but I am hard on myself.
أُحاسبُهاI hold it accountable علىfor كلّevery انتباهٍattention
يُشتتنيdistracts me وقدwhile already حضرَhas arrived الشرودُreverie
I call it to account for every moment of attention
I hold myself to account for every moment of attention
that scatters me, though absent-mindedness is already here.
that distracts me when reverie has already come.
وحينَand when أُحسُّI feel فيwithin ذاتيmyself انهزاماًsurrender
للذّتهاto its pleasure بهاthrough it عنهاaway from it أحيدُI turn aside!
And when I sense defeat within my being,
And when I sense surrender within myself
for its own delight, through it I turn away from it!
to its pleasure, through it I turn away from it!
وأقبَلُand I accept كلَّevery حُزنٍsorrow لاnot خضوعاًin submission
ولكنْbut بعدَهُafter it يأتيcomes القصيدُpoetry
I embrace every sorrow—not submissively—
And I accept every sorrow, not in submission,
but after it comes the poem.
but because poetry comes after it.
أخبئُI conceal حينَwhen تفضحُنيexpose me عيونيmy eyes
وماand what فيin القلبِthe heart يعرفهُknows it الوريدُthe vein
I conceal it when my eyes betray me,
I hide when my eyes betray me,
and what is in the heart, the jugular knows.
and the vein knows what is in the heart.
وأكثرُand most ماwhat يَسُلُّdraws out الصبرَpatience منّيfrom me
إذاwhen أُقصيتُI am cast aside، أنْthat يرقىrises البليدُthe dullard
What most draws patience out of me,
And what most strips patience from me
when I am cast aside, is that the dullard rises.
is the dullard's rise when I am cast aside.
خُلقتُI was created مُبرَّأًuntainted منby كلّall كُرهٍhatred
وأرغمنيand compelled me علىinto الكُرهِhatred الحَسودُthe envious one
I was created free of every hatred,
I was created free of all hatred,
but the envious man forced me into hatred.
and the envious one compelled me to hate.
أأكذبُam I lying? حينَwhen أحلفُI swear أنّthat قلبيmy heart
علىdespite ماwhat فيهِis in it منof أُممٍnations وحيدُalone؟
Am I lying when I swear that my heart,
Am I lying when I swear that my heart,
despite the nations within it, is alone?
despite the nations within it, is alone?
نعيشُwe live بكوكبٍon a planet ماno فيهِin it عَيشٌlife
ونعشقهُand we adore it وأكثرُهُand most of it يهودُJews!
We live on a planet where there is no living,
We live on a planet where there is no life,
and we adore it—though most of it is Jews!
and we love it, though most of its people are Jews!
ونطمعُand we long أنto نشيخَgrow old بهِon it لنحياso we may live
بلاwithout قيدٍa shackle، فتزدادُso they increase القيودُthe shackles
We hope to grow old upon it, that we may live
And we long to grow old on it, to live
without restraint—and the chains increase.
without a shackle, yet the shackles multiply.
نَبيدُwe perish لأجلهِfor its sake ونُبيدُand we annihilate حتّىso that
بفضلthanks to دمائناour blood بقيَhas endured الوجودُexistence
We perish for its sake and destroy it, until
We perish for its sake and annihilate, so that
by grace of our blood, existence endured.
existence has endured thanks to our blood.
أياO ذاpossessor of التسعِthe nine والتسعينand ninety إسماًname

O Possessor of the ninety-nine Names,
O You with the ninety-nine names,
the dearest of them to my heart is al-Ḥamīd, the Praiseworthy.
and the closest of them to my heart is the Praiseworthy,
بعصرٍin an age قرّبَbrought near الأفلاكَthe celestial spheres منّاto us
لماذاwhy حُلمُناour dream دوماًalways بعيدُdistant؟
In an age when the celestial spheres have drawn near to us,
in an age that has brought the celestial spheres close to us,
why is our dream always distant?
why is our dream always distant?
ولمand did not نطلبwe ask منَfrom الدنياthe world كثيراًmuch
لتَمنَعَناfor it to deny us، ويأخُذَهَاand take it العبيدُthe slaves
We never asked much of the world,
And we have not asked much of the world,
only for it to deny us, while slaves seize it.
for it to deny us, while slaves take it.
هباءٌdust; futility أنto تَعيشَyou live لأجلِfor the sake of حُلمٍa dream
وماand there is no فيon الأرضِthe earth هارونُHarun الرشيدُal-Rashid
It is futile to live for a dream
To live for a dream is dust,
and there is no Hārūn al-Rashīd on earth.
when there is no Harun al-Rashid on earth.
تمتعenjoy بالقليلِwith the little فإنَّfor indeed دُنياa world
عليهاon it تُنفقُyou expend العلياthe loftiest things، جَحُودُungrateful
Enjoy the little, for it is a world
Enjoy the little, for a world
upon which the noblest spend themselves—a thankless world.
on which you expend the loftiest things is ungrateful.
فحصّةُfor the share كلّall منwho ولدواwere born عليهاupon it
وإنand even if بلغواthey reach الذرىthe summits قبرٌa grave ودودُloving
For the lot of everyone born upon it,
For the share of all who were born upon it,
even if they reach the peaks, is a loving grave.
even if they reach the summits, is a loving grave.
