وبحَّتكَand your husky voice الثملىdrunken لماذاwhy هيَit الأُخرىtoo؟
Why, when you departed, did you not take the memory with you?
Why, when you left, did you not take the memory?
And why is your drunken, husky voice still here too?
And your drunken, husky voice—why leave that too?
وعطركَand your scent ماwhat يُبقيهِkeeps it فيَّin me؟ أمor انَّهُit is
سلاحكَyour weapon كيso that أحنيI bend لعودتكَfor your return العُمراthe lifetime
And your perfume—what keeps it in me? Or is it
And your scent—what keeps it in me? Or is it
your weapon, to make my whole life bow to your return?
your weapon, so I bend my lifetime toward your return?
ألمdid you not تلقنيmeet me بالوردِwith roses أوّلَat the beginning of أمرناour affair
وعمّرتَand you built منfrom معسولِhoneyed قولكَyour speech ليfor me قصراa palace
Did you not greet me with roses at the beginning of our affair,
Did you not greet me with roses when we first began,
and build me a palace from your honeyed words?
and build me a palace from your honeyed words?
فأينَso where هيَit الفردوسُparadise؟ إنّيَindeed I لمdid not أجدI find

Where, then, is paradise? I have found
Where, then, is paradise? I have found nothing
nothing in this love but your red hell!
in this love but your red hell!
تُخبّيyou conceal بماwith what أوتيتَyou were given ماwhat هوit ظاهرٌplain to see!
وأنتَand you بماof what خلّفتَyou left behind منof خيبةٍdisappointment أدرىmore aware
With all you were given, you hide what is plainly seen,
With what you have been given, you hide what is plain to see!
though you know best the disappointment you left behind.
And you know best the disappointment you left behind.
كأنّكَas though you were فيin حربٍa war، تحاولُyou try كسبَهاto win it
ولوand even if بالأسىthrough sorrow والظُلمand injustice تستعذبُyou savor النّصراvictory
As though you were fighting a war you sought to win,
As though you were in a war, trying to win it,
savoring victory even through sorrow and cruelty.
and even through sorrow and injustice, you savor victory.
وهبتُكَI gave you ماwhat لاnot تستحقُّyou deserve، وليتهُand if only it

I gave you what you did not deserve—if only it had
I gave you what you do not deserve; if only it
at worst kept me safe from betrayal.
had, at the very least, kept me safe from betrayal.
أماdid you not قلتَyou said: تنجوshe is saved منshe who أكونُI am حياتَهاher life؟

Did you not say, “She whose life I am shall be saved”?
Did you not say, 'She whose life I am will be saved'?
You lied: you were the Resurrection and the Gathering.
You lied: you were indeed the Resurrection and the Gathering.

Near, distant, impossible and possible—
Near, far, impossible and possible,
whether I lose him or win him, he is a grave predicament.
and in losing him or winning him lies a great predicament.
ويكذبُand he lies بعضَsome of الشيءِthe thing، لكنbut أُحبُّهُI love him!
ومنand with غيرno عُذرٍexcuse كمhow many خلقتُI created لهُfor him عُذراan excuse
He lies a little—but I love him!
And he lies a little, yet I love him!
Though I had no excuse, how many excuses I made for him.
And with no excuse, how many excuses I have made for him!

And he is argumentative whenever I reproach him,
And he is argumentative about the matter when I reproach him,
contesting me until he makes me bear the blame!
he argues with me until he makes me bear the guilt!

Whenever I sinned, I repented; but if he committed
If ever I sinned, I repented; but if he committed
sins and I cornered him with them, he lost patience.
sins and I cornered him with them, he lost patience.

فإنand if ردَّhe replies فيin يومينِtwo days إنْif… ردَّhe replies ليto me سطراa line
When my heart longs, I send him a whole newspaper;
And when my heart yearns, I send a newspaper,
if he answers within two days—if he answers—he sends me one line.
and if he replies in two days—if he does—he sends me one line.

ويحرمُنيand he denies me فيin بيدِthe deserts of أضلاعهِhis ribs الشبراa handspan
I give him my earth and the sky out of affection,
And I give him my earth and the sky, out of affection,
while, miserly within his ribs, he denies me even an inch.
yet he denies me a handspan in the deserts of his ribs.

I offer him feeling first, seeking nothing but
I offer him my feelings first, seeking nothing but
that he understand my love—yet his pride kills me.
his understanding of my love; yet he kills me with arrogance.

Whatever he wanted for our love—if openly—
Even if he wanted our love to be public,
I would accept; and if in secret, I would not refuse the secret.
I would accept; and if secret, I would not refuse secrecy.

After the calamity, I uncovered his many faces,
He has faces I uncovered after the calamity,
and the gentlest of them in love was the most evil.
and the gentlest of them in love is the most evil!

And all the women knew that he was
And all the women knew that
green on the surface, a desert within.
his outward appearances are green, but his inner self is a desert.

I know his clouds better than his own mother does—
And I know his clouds better than his mother does,
especially when they are meant for another lady!
especially if they are for another lady!

To myself, my patience, and my tears—for the sorrow,
To myself, to my patience, to the tears—for the sorrow
and for all I endured in loving him—my thanks.
and for all I endured in loving him—thank you.
