My heart—I know it—do not feel safe from its danger.

Before becoming entangled with me, count to ten.

I may not love, and I may consume you with passion.

The decision is yours; do not underestimate its magnitude.

My love is turmoil, and my dreams are a gamble.

And whoever leaves me, I do not follow his trail.

Fear the endings, however confident you may be.

The tree meets its death at the hands of its son, the axe.

I say what I said not to burden you, nor

out of indifference to your love; but my journey is rugged.

Many women find it alluring that I am not awaiting

love in order to live, nor a victory to win.

Love's outward appearances are immortal souls,

yet it is nothing but bones, all of them decayed.

    كما ترينَ ببابي ألفُ مُنتَظِرة!

    So if you are resolved, do not hurry my clouds;

as you see, a thousand women are waiting at my door!

You try—but what draws you to a man

whose breast holds a lofty, broken resolve?

Rendered powerless ever since he was cast in the wrong place,

like a standalone hamza when placed on a yāʾ-shaped seat.

    He remains unsettled, estranged, anxious

about everything, as is the poets' habit.

And I have wreckage called life; whenever I would

look into it, I would see the soul dying.

And I have ambition without luck; with it I hold

a mourning ceremony for a dream over which my grief itself grieves!

    في كلّ شبرينِ من أحلامِهِ عَثَرَة

    And I have an Iraqi temperament, steeped in ennui;

in every two handspans of its dreams lies a stumbling block.

The fair-minded readers of my poetry say: 'Bravo!

You will surely see the immortality you hoped for.'

As for my enemies, none are my equals; the greatest of them

is a petty, obscure critic, or a nameless versifier.

They were vexed and resented in me nothing but gold

in poems and verses spread far and wide.

And I am not vexed by them; they are the dregs of my memory!

And in the end, each receives his allotted share.

The exile weeps with longing when he sees a homeland

for others; what makes you yourself weep, I wonder?

I weep for my country and a steadfast, heroic people,

with nothing left on this earth that has not oppressed them.

Life's face toward us after our exile

is like Pharaoh's face when the sorcerers were cast down!

O Lord, whoever burned the dreams in our hands

for the sake of his throne—hasten his Saqar for him!

Things have deteriorated since our world was occupied by

the sons of those commanded to slaughter a cow.

And I became superstitious only after

the men among us were lost—and superstition is not my habit.

Sleep, Jurayj; the faces of prostitutes hold

some modesty, despite ill fortune and dust!

What did we do to be tormented by the sight

of Lot's people, the clan of al-Wahsh (the Beast), and the wicked?

Adam's son has grown tyrannical, enthralled by his power,

and no longer recognizes the smallness of his stature.

How, then, can you hope for sweetness from this world

if you have moral character amid a filthy crowd?

O people, my eye is in love with some evil!

And if you reproach me, from it the righteous are born.

    وإن قضى اللهُ ما للمرءِ من خِيَرَة

    The Wise One has decreed what we fear, which also sets us right;

and if God decrees, a person has no choice.

The solution lies in Islam returning once again

to the past, and bringing its Umar back to life for us!

His feeling for what his nation endures—

nothing remains of a human being if he loses it.

And his love of safety may blind his insight

to salvation, just as it blinds his eyesight.

Some ease the misery of living

by saying that in patience lies a fertile, green land.

And indeed, a lifetime in which it is easy for us to attain

all that is forbidden is hard—its mother is hard too!

I conceal my deepest depressions; they are revealed

    by bitter, deadly, discontented poems.

If there is anything that calls for hope,

then it is my Lord's promise that al-Sham will be victorious.
