صوتُكَ العالي الذي ما أسمَعا
مثلماjust as تسعىyou strive هباءًin vain قدindeed سَعىstrove!
مثلما تسعى هباءً قد سَعى!
Your loud voice, which went unheard,
Your loud voice that I no longer hear
has striven in vain, just as you strive!
As it vainly strives like vanishing vapor!

قدَرُ الحيِّ وإنْ لم يَرضَهُ

أن يُداري ما استطاعَ الوجعَا
The living person's lot, though he may not accept it,
Fate of the living, though it displeases him
is to soothe his pain as best he can.
Is to endure what has befallen

O heart, summon patience and endure;
Oh heart, be patient and show resilience
and do be patient, and be patient with what has happened.
Endure and be patient for what has happened

حقُّها بالأرضِ أن لا تقنَعا
You have made your soul hope for Paradise;
You wished for paradise for yourself
it has the right not to be content with earth.
Rightly it belongs not to be content on earth

Ah, if only he knew what I endured—
Oh, if only he who caused me suffering knew
that cruel one—so that we might stay together.
That cruel one, so we could stay together

Do not blame him, O my longing; indeed, I
Do not blame him, my yearning, I
died of love, while he flattered and pretended.
Die of love while he shuns and pretends

If only he would weep for me at night, as
Would that he weep for me by night
I fill the night with tears for him.
While I fill the night with tears for him

How can I keep in my heart's depths someone who
How can I keep in the heart's orb one who
refused union whenever I sought it?
Whenever I try to connect, blocks the way

And waiting for a thing increases its worth;
Awaiting something increases its merit
and patience burning away revives panic.
Burning impatience revives fervor

The nightmare has gone; so rise and regain
The nightmare has departed, arise and prepare
your past glory, and that coveted goal.
Your past glory, and that longed-for

The door is opened onto a future
in which your gifted star has shone.
Where your gifted star shines anew

Sudden good fortune is false security;
Sudden good fortune is deceptive haven
after it, sorrows come in succession.
After it sorrows come in sequence

And it is wrong, after immense patience,
And after such majestic patience
for events to witness dismay in us.
It would be wrong if events make us despair

Perhaps another time will come
in which we praise the wound and the scalpel.
When we praise the wound and the crutch

O defeat amid sorrow's triumphs,
Oh defeat in the victories of sorrow
and solitary one who returned from them in fragments!
And solitary it returns, bidden farewell

Indeed, one whose dreams have died within him—
For he whose dreams have died
what can console him when the herald announces death?
What can console him if the mourner mourns?

Your loud voice, what can it avail
it makes people hear, yet no heart understands?
If people hear, and no heart understands?

People did not care for you as you lived
Creation did not watch over you
through loss, but God cared.
In your lost life, but God watched over.
