يُسائِلُنِيasks me مُعاوِيَةُMu‘awiyah بْنُson of هِنْدٍHind:
لَقِيتَdid you meet أَباthe father of سُلالَةِthe offspring of عَبْدِ‘Abd (servant of) شَمْسٍShams (the sun)؟
Mu‘awiyah, son of Hind, asks me:
"Have you met the father of ‘Abd Shams’s offspring?"
فَقُلْتُso I said لَهُto him رَأَيْتُI saw أَباكَyour father شَيْخاًan old man
كَبِيرَadvanced in السِّنِّage مَضْرُوباًstricken بِطِمْسِwith blindness
So I said to him, "I saw your father, an old man,
advanced in age, stricken with blindness;
يَقُودُleads بِهِhim along أُفَيْحِجُa bowlegged little fellow عَبْدُa slave of سُوءٍwickedness
فَقالَthen he said: بَلِrather ابْنُهُhis son، لِيُزِيلَto dispel لُبْسِيmy confusion
a bowlegged little fellow, a vile slave, was leading him along."
Then he said, "Rather, his son," to dispel my confusion.
