عَرَتها اللَيالي فَاِبكِياها لَيالِيا
The nights erased her, altered her, and transformed her;
The nights befell her, so weep for her for nights on end.

Seek him, to claim my due from him, if he is a judge.

Hark, rise and recite a poem, O Ibn Hani,
For I see Harun—by God—listening attentively.

مِنَ السافِراتِ الزُهرِ تُزري الدَرايا
Hark, rise and recite to me, and recite to him, a marvel
Among the radiant unveiled beauties, putting the shining stars to shame.

فَما أَدري ما يَبكونَ يَبكونَ وادِيا
The kings of the sons of al-Abbas weep beneath the soil;
I do not know what they weep—they weep a whole valley.

Long time erased it; its own days wore it away—days that
Revealed in it a condition that delights its enemies.

Would that I had not gazed upon what I have gazed upon,
And would that, before now, I had never been one who gazed.
