Over the yellowed cheek, a spring of ours flows,
For estrangement has set it flowing; grant union, mistress of estrangement.
صِلىgrant union عَلَّperhaps هَذاthis القَلبَthe heart يُطفاis quenched لِهيبُهُits blaze
فَواللَهِfor, by God إِنif لَمnot يالَهيبَهُoh, its blaze! فيin صَدريmy breast
Grant union; perhaps this heart's blaze will be quenched.
For, by God, if not—oh, its blaze within my breast!
يَقولونَthey say ماnot جادَتshe was generous بِوَصلٍwith union هُوَit is الدَواthe cure

They say she has not granted union, which is the cure
For your ailment; rather, the bearer of sin has wasted you away.

وَلَكِنَّنيbut I آباهُI reject it فيin السِرِّsecret وَالجَهرِand openness
They speak words the like of which I do not heed,
Yet I reject them, in secret and in public.

كَفىenough ماwhat كَفاhas sufficed هاويكَyour lover ياO رَبَّةَmistress of الخِدرِthe secluded chamber
Ask her to be pleased with me, and tell her: have mercy;
Enough—your lover has had enough, O mistress of the secluded chamber.

And were it not for a life unlike any other,
My eye's tears would not have spilled onto my upper chest.
أَلاtake heed فَاِخبِروهاso tell her أَنَّنيthat I عاشِقٌam a lover لَهاof her

سَقانيgave me to drink الهَوىlove كَأساًa cup أَمَرَّmore bitter مِنthan المُرِّbitterness
Listen, then: tell her that I am in love with her;
Love made me drink a cup more bitter than bitterness.
مُعَذِّبَتيmy tormentress وَاللَهِby God بِالبَينِwith parting وَالنَوىand distance
أَطارَتdrove away مَناميmy sleep بَلrather شَوَتنيroasted me عَلىupon الجَمرِthe embers
She who torments me, by God, with parting and distance,
Has banished my sleep—nay, roasted me upon the embers.
مَرِضتُI fell ill فَقالواso they said ماwhat شِفاكَyour cure فَقُلتُso I said ماnot

I fell ill; they asked, 'What is your cure?' I said: nothing
Will cure me but a rosy-red draught.
لَئِنif indeed خَيَّرونيthey gave me a choice بَينَbetween كَأسٍa cup وَحِجَّةٍand a pilgrimage

If indeed they gave me a choice between a cup and a pilgrimage,
I would choose only the cup of wine that is her saliva.
