    What ails him, that he always laments?

    A lovesick man whom wounds have wasted.

    إِرحَما ما فيهِ روحُ

    Have mercy on him, you two, through reunion;

    have mercy, you two, while life remains in him.

    His night lets fall upon him

    curtains that never gleam.

    ذو وَلَكِن لا يَبوحُ

    Full of yearning, full of groaning;

    full of these, and yet he does not confide.

    it was said that lament lay within him.

    ذا جَوىً أَيضاً يَروحُ

    With burning grief, by your life, he goes forth at dawn;

    with burning grief, too, he returns at dusk.

    On the morning of parting, accounts fell short

    of recounting the news of this.

    When, that morning, riding-camels were saddled,

    for departure and parting, there was lament.

    The women’s caravan moved on, and the litters

    were wounds of anguish within him.

    Leave him, you two, in his sorrow,

    and go on, you two, for love is Yūḥ, the sun.
