The nights laid her waste when they harbored treachery.

Indeed, the nights are the afflictions of this world.

So let no one be deceived by them; indeed, they hold

what makes beauty something no eyes gaze upon.

How many peoples they have changed, how many states replaced!

How many settlements have become ruins through their deeds!

    وَالقَوسُ يَبكيكِ وَالميزانُ وَالحَمَلُ

    Angels weep for you in sorrow, Andalusia;

and the Bow weeps for you, and the Scales and the Ram.

O people of Andalusia, is it a dream in a doze—

what has befallen you—or a phantom glimpsed by a drunkard?

O people of Andalusia, a young maiden weeps for you.

O people of Andalusia, a child weeps for you.

ʿUdhra laments you, O people of Andalusia.

O people of Andalusia, Thuʿal laments you.

O caravan, turn aside to al-Zahra, for within her lies

what, if you saw it, would turn your wide eyes white.

Saddle the mounts! What I have seen is enough—saddle them! Enough!

So now the time has come for me to return from this world.
