The bright white and deep black of his eyes prolonged my bewilderment;
Eyes whose gazes lengthened my bewilderment
it left my tears like his safflower-tinted cheek.
Leaving tears like his blushed cheeks

ليلٌa night تَبلَّجbroke into brightness عنto reveal نهارa day مسفرِradiant
A bough swaying above a mound of fine sand,
A branch leaned over a thin palm trunk
a night that broke to reveal a radiant day.
A night shone from a radiant day

Like the sun, except that he breathes
Like the sun but with a soul
out musk, smiling to reveal jewels.
Smiling with musk's scent and essence
وأطالand he lengthened منof ليليmy night وقَصَّرand he shortened ليلهhis night
أنِّيthat I سهرتُI stayed awake وأنهand that he لمdid not يسهرstay awake
And he lengthened my night and shortened his own,
He made my night longer and shortened his
for I stayed awake, while he did not.
For I was awake though he did not keep vigil
