Take it from the dark-eyed gazelle;
Take it from the most beautiful gazelle
breathing its scent is like breathing a breeze of ambergris.
Whose breath relates the scent of ambergris

A young gazelle brought joy the morning he offered
Joy brought on the morrow when a meadow exulted

With a greeting of lilac blossoms for you

Peacock-like in its coloring, safflower-dyed—
Adorned in its hue, saffron-yellow

Most fair in its view, sweetest to sense

It grew jealous in guarding its beauty
so it keeps concealing it, though it is not itself veiled.
So it shades it even when shade’s not its purpose

And when it grudgingly begins to bloom, it shows us
a hue akin to that of cut precious stones.

It is water's companion; the two are gracefully alike;
The waters befriend it with elegance
so whenever it leaves its counterpart, it is no longer seen.
So when does its shape ever escape sight?

It floats for a while, then lifts its head
with effeminate softness, supple bending, and languid swaying.
With coquetry, desire, and fluttering
