علىfor نَكبِهاtheir ruin نكباءُa crosswind مُورٍswirling dust وحَرجَفُهand its icy gale
Haunts of youthful dalliance—bands of the east wind were gathered
for their ruin by a dust-laden crosswind and its icy gale.
لَبِسنَthey donned نُحوليmy wasting أوor لَبِستُI donned نُحولَهاtheir wasting
فتَعرِفُso you recognize فيهاin them كُلَّall ماthat which فيَّin me تَعرِفُهyou recognize it
They have donned my wasting—or I have donned theirs;
so in them you recognize all that you recognize in me.
تُراحُthey are fanned بأنفاسٍby breaths فؤاديmy heart مَهَبُّهاtheir source of blowing
وتُسقىand they are watered بمُزنٍby rainclouds دَمعُtears عينيmy eye يُكفكِفُهholds it back
They are fanned by breaths whose source is my heart,
and watered by rainclouds that my eye's tears hold back.
ولاغَروَand no wonder أنthat يَبلىwastes away بلىdecay الدارthe dwelling مُغرَمٌa lover
فانّfor indeed بلحظby a glance العينthe eye يُدنَفُis made gravely ill مُدنَفُهits afflicted one
And no wonder a lover wastes away as the dwelling does,
for a glance of the eye lays low the one it afflicts.
منازِلabodes أنزاليmy guest-fare إذاwhen ماever (emphasis) نَزَلتُهاI lodge in them
أسىًsorrow وقِرَىand the guest-fare عينيmy eye بهاin them الدمعُthe tears تَذرفُهit sheds them
Abodes—whenever I lodge in them, my fare
is sorrow; my eye's fare there is the tears it sheds.
تَحَيَّفنَthey wore away أيديhands نَوئِهاtheir rainstorm أَيدَstrength نُؤيهاtheir encircling trench
فلمso not يَبقَremain للأيامfor the days ماanything that تَتَحَيَّفُهthey wear it away
The hands of their rainstorm have worn away their encircling trench's strength,
so nothing remains for the days to wear away.
