عَهديmy recollection بهاof them وضياءُand the radiance الصُبحِof dawn يُطفِئُهاextinguishes them
عَهدي بها وضياءُ الصُبحِ يُطفِئُها
كالسُرجِlike lamps تُطفَأbeing extinguished أوor كالأعيُنِlike eyes العُورِsightless
كالسُرجِ تُطفَأ أو كالأعيُنِ العُورِ
I remember them as dawn's radiance extinguished them,
Like lamps put out, or sightless eyes.
أعجِبmarvel بهat it حينwhen وافىit arrived وهَيَwhile they were نَيِّرَةٌradiant
أعجِب به حين وافى وهَيَ نَيِّرَةٌ
فظلَّand it went on يَطمِسُeffacing منهاfrom them النورَthe light بالنُورِwith light
فظلَّ يَطمِسُ منها النورَ بالنُورِ
How wondrous it was when it arrived while they were radiant,
And went on effacing their light with light.
