I wrote—may God preserve your glory—safe and sound,
yet I am not safe from longing for you.

Consider my letter: indeed, between its lines lie
lines drawn with the pens of streaming tears.

ولو عَلِمَ القرطاسُ ما في ضميره

شكا وبكا لكنَّهُ غير عالم
And if the paper knew what lay within its heart,
it would lament and weep, but it does not know.
ولوand if ضمنتcontained كُتبيmy letters منof الشوقthe longing بعضsome of ماwhat

تضمنّن قلبي صرنَ كُتبَ ملاحِمِ
And if my letters held some of the longing that
my heart holds, they would become chronicles of bloody battles.

And if I did not soothe my ribs with hope,
they would fall apart from the grief heaped up within them.
لعلَّperhaps اللياليthe nights أنthat تَعُدنَreturn بماwith what مضىhas passed
لعلَّ الليالي أن تَعُدنَ بما مضى
فَتَحكُمَand then rule ليin my favor فيهاduring them بردِّby redressing المظالمwrongs
فَتَحكُمَ لي فيها بردِّ المظالم
Perhaps the nights will bring back what has passed,
and rule in my favor then, redressing wrongs.
