ويومٍand a day كأنَّas though الشمسَthe sun منfrom تحتِbeneath غَيمِهِits cloud cover
ويومٍ كأنَّ الشمسَ من تحتِ غَيمِهِ
مفاخرُglories قدalready غَطَّيتهاyou covered them بعيوبِwith faults
مفاخرُ قد غَطَّيتها بعيوبِ
And a day when the sun beneath its clouds seemed
And a day when the sun beneath its clouds
Like glories you had covered with faults.
Seems like boasts covered in faults
إذاwhen طلعتit rose منfrom فرجةٍan opening فيهin it خلتهاI thought it
إذا طلعت من فرجةٍ فيه خلتها
مَخيلةَa promise جَدوىbounty منfrom خلالِthe midst of جدوبِbarrenness
مَخيلةَ جَدوى من خلالِ جدوبِ
When it emerged through a gap in them, I thought it
When it emerges from an opening where it's alone
A promise of bounty amid barrenness.
The imagination of efficacy through an arid channel
وقدand had مدَّdrawn ستراًa veil فوقهاover it فكأنّماso it was as though
وقد مدَّ ستراً فوقها فكأنّما
تغطيyou cover بكفرانٍwith ingratitude ثوابَthe reward مثيبِone who rewards
تغطي بكفرانٍ ثوابَ مثيبِ
And the cloud had drawn a veil over it, as though
As if it spreads a veil above
You were veiling a benefactor's reward with ingratitude.
And covers with ingratitude the reward of the rewarder
