And a day so bitterly cold that the sun seemed

To have its heat on earth turn to the chill of ice.

On it we kindled a fire whose blaze seemed

The flush of a cheek, or an envier's heart.

It creeps like wine through the soul, and has flared

Like rancor blazing in a spiteful person's ribs.

With charcoal whose effect is like days of union,

Yet whose appearance to the eye is a day of rejection.

As though the fire's flame amid its gaps

Were lightning flashes gleaming in black clouds.
