ثوىlay buried الفقهُjurisprudence فيin قعرthe depths of الثرىthe earth مذsince ثوىhe lay buried بهِin it
ثوى الفقهُ في قعر الثرى مذ ثوى بهِ
وغاصَتand sank بحارُthe seas of الشعرِpoetry وانقطعand ceased النظمُverse
وغاصَت بحارُ الشعرِ وانقطع النظمُ
Jurisprudence has lain buried in the depths of the earth since he was buried there.
And the seas of poetry sank, and verse ceased.
ولوand if أنّthat هذاthis الموتَdeath خصمٌan adversary مفوّةٌeloquent
ولو أنّ هذا الموتَ خصمٌ مفوّةٌ
لأَفحمهwould have silenced it منthrough عزِّthe might of ألفاظهhis words خَصمُan adversary
لأَفحمه من عزِّ ألفاظه خَصمُ
And if this death were an eloquent adversary,
An adversary would have silenced it through the might of his words.
