لهit has فيin الثَرىthe soil فعلُthe effect of الشِفاءhealing بمُدنَفِupon one gravely ill
A cloud came like safety after fear,
Clouds came like safety after apprehension
with the effect upon the soil of healing upon one gravely ill.
It has in the earth the effect of healing with downpour
أكَبَّbent down علىover الآفاقِthe horizons إكبابَthe bowing of مُطرِقٍone with head lowered
تذكّرُremembering أوor كالنادمlike the remorseful man المتلهفthe anguished one
It bent over the horizons like one bowing his head,
It leaned on the horizons, leaning heavily
remembering, or like a remorseful man in anguish.
I recall or like the regretful yearning one
ببرقٍwith lightning لوif المقرورُthe chilled man اصبحَbegan يصطليwarming himself
منfrom الأرضthe ground فيin قلبthe heart of الشتاءwinter بهby it دفيgrew warm
With lightning—if a chilled man began to warm himself
With lightning, if the stricken became kindled
by it from the ground in winter’s heart, he would grow warm.
From the earth in the heart of winter, it keeps him warm
ومَدَّand spread جَناحَيهِits two wings علىover الأرضِthe earth جانحاًleaning down
فراحَand went عليهاover it كالغُرابlike a raven المُرَفرِفِfluttering
And it spread its two wings over the earth, leaning low,
And it spreads its wings over the earth leaning
and drifted over it like a fluttering raven.
So it went over it like the fluttering crow
غداbecame البَرُّthe dry land بحراًa sea زاخراًsurging وانثنىand turned back الضحىthe morning
بظُلمتهin its darkness فيin ثَوبthe robe of ليلٍa night مُسَجَّفveiled
The land became a surging sea, and morning turned back,
Tomorrow, the land became a brimming sea and the morning bent
in its darkness, wearing the robe of a veiled night.
With its darkness in the garment of a folded night
يُعَبِّسُit frowns عنrevealing بَرقٍlightning بهwithin it مُتَبَسِّمٍsmiling
عُبُوسَthe frown of بخيلٍa miser فيat تبسُّمthe smile of مُعتَفِa supplicant
It frowns, revealing lightning smiling within it—
It frowns from lightning, with which it smiles
the frown of a miser at a supplicant’s smile.
The frown of a stingy person in a recognized smile
دجاهُits gloom إذاwhen ماever (emphatic) لاحتappeared الشمسthe sun مُبطلٌeffacing
سناهاits radiance كمنٍّlike reproachful reminders of favors مُبطلٍnullifying مَنَّthe gift of مُسعفِa benefactor
Its gloom, whenever the sun appears, effaces
Its darkness when the sun appears, invalidates
its radiance, as reproachful reminders undo a benefactor’s gift.
Its brilliance like a granter invalidating, gave favor
كأنَّas though التماعَthe flashing of البرقlightning فيin ظُلماتهits darkness
As though the flashing lightning in its darkness
As if the flashing of lightning in its darkness
were guidance amid error, dawning and then vanishing.
Is guidance in misguidance that starts then disappears
تحاولُseeks منهout of it الشمسُthe sun فيin الجوِّthe sky مَخرجاًa way out
كماjust as حاولtried المغلُوبُthe vanquished man تجريدَunsheathing مُرهَفِa keen-edged sword
The sun seeks a way out of it in the sky,
The sun from it in the air tries a way out
as a vanquished man tries to unsheathe a keen-edged sword.
As the defeated tries to liberate a drawn sword
إذاwhen وَصَلَتهُreached it شمألٌa north wind صدَّturned away قاطعاًbreaking off
صدودَthe turning away of المعنّىthe tormented man عنfrom عذولa reprover مُعَنِّفِharshly rebuking
When a north wind reaches it, it turns away, breaking off,
When it is reached by rays, it blocks decisively
like a tormented man shunning a harsh reprover.
The blocking of meaning from a resentful obstinate
فأفرغthen it poured out ماءًwater قالsaid واردُone approaching شربهits drinking water
أسلسالُis it sweet-flowing ماءٍwater أمor سُلافَةُthe choicest portion of قَرقَفِwine
Then it poured out water; one who came to drink it said:
So it poured water, the rain said its drinking
“Is this sweet-flowing water, or the choicest wine?”
Are chains of water or ridges of a drinking vessel
غداbecame رحمةa mercy للناسfor people غيريexcept me فإنهfor indeed it
عليَّupon me عذابٌa torment مالهit has no منany (emphatic) تكشّفclearing
It became a mercy to everyone but me, for it
It became mercy for people other than me, for it is
is torment upon me, with no clearing away.
Upon me a torment that has no relief
سحابٌa cloud عدانيkept me away عنfrom سحابٍa cloud (figuratively, a benefactor) وعارضٌand a cloud-bank
مُنعتُI was barred بهby it منfrom عارضa cheek (also a cloud-bank) متكفكفdrawing back
A cloud kept me from another cloud, and a cloud-bank—
A cloud deprived me of clouds and confronted
through it I was barred from a cheek drawing back.
I am prevented by it from a relieving confronter
