وليلةand a night ترَكَleft البردُthe cold البلادَthe land بهاin it
كالقلبlike a heart أشعِرَwas made to feel يأساًdespair وهوwhile it was مثلوجfrozen
And a night when the cold left the land
And on a night when the cold left the land
like a heart filled with despair, frozen.
My heart felt despair though it was frozen
فإنfor if بَسَطتَyou extended يداًa hand لمdid not تنبسطit opens خَصَراًfrom numbness with cold
وإِنand if تقلَّyou say little فقلthen say ليfor me فيهin it تثليجfreezing
For if you extend a hand, it will not open, numb with cold.
If you stretch out a hand, waist won't stretch
And if you say little, say: 'It freezes me.'
And if you speak little, tell me of the cooling
فنحنso we منهbecause of it ولمand have not نخرسwe become mute ذووpossessors of خَرَسٍmuteness
ونحنand we منهbecause of it ولمand have not نفلجwe are stricken with palsy مفاليجparalyzed people
So it leaves us speechless, though we have not become mute;
For we are of it yet no mutes made mute
and it leaves us paralyzed, though no palsy has struck us.
And we are of it yet no paralyzed paralyzed
