Qushayr gloated over its friend's misfortune,
While an old woman gloated over her friend
and another, despised by it and disparaging it.
And another blaming her and being hostile

But Malik, a brother of high honor and generosity,
But the brother of glory and generosity, Malik
kept faith through separation and mutual goodwill.
Kept true to the covenant and accord

The bulls lay drowned by morning, and by morning
So the bulls drowned and the women of Tameem
the women of Tamim were gathering their horns.
Picked up the broken spears

It has piled-up clouds in the lowland, the lowland of Tihama,
For it after the support of the wet nurse and its calm
answering a dark Yemeni cloud at al-Ra'sha.
And the clamor of one who weeps if he wept
فَأَصبَحَso it was at dawn بِالقِمرىat al-Qimra يَجُرُّdragging عَفاءَهُits trailing fringe

By morning at al-Qimra it dragged its trailing fringe,
The neighing of the bull tossing its head
uniform in hue, night-colored, black and deeply dark.
Attacking the dogs with its horns

When it drew near al-Kharj, the Kharj of Unayza,
And the stillness of the wet masses of urine
and Dhu Baqar, it dropped its anchors there.
Of which the women's modesty does not relish contact
لَهاit has بَعدَafter إِسنادِthe raised cry of الكَلِيمِthe wounded one وهَدئِهِand his hush

After the wounded one's rising cry and his hush, it has,
Will you not convey to Awf and his camel friends
and the lament of a weeper when he weeps,
He who intends evil will not lack it; do not live
هَدِيرٌa roar هَدِيرَthe roar of الثورِthe bull يَنفُضُshakes رَأسَهُits head

a roar like the roar of a bull shaking its head,
So which eye of you will weep if you perish
warding off the attacking dogs with its two horns.
It did not dry until it died as it was

And women like statues, with proud noses, in whom
The broken fangs are not the tattered clothing
modesty dwells; they spread no backbiting.
Of a lion protecting Tihama's valley
أَلاlisten أَبلِغاtell (you two) عَوفاًAwf وَصاحِبَand the companion of رَحلِهِhis saddle

Now, you two, tell Awf and his saddle-companion:
When it sees a dangling horn it craves and pants
Whoever strays will not lack someone to rebuke his error.
Bold against the horns, attacking fiercely
فَأَيّتُمَاso whichever عَينِeye بَكَتweeps إِنif هَلَكتُماyou two perish

Whichever eye weeps if you two perish,
So it is not preceded by anything it wants
may its tears never cease until it dies, still weeping.
And it is not overcome and has no escape
وَماand not شَكِسُsavage الأَنيابِin fangs شَثنٌthick بَنانُهُits toes

Nor is any savage-fanged, thick-pawed beast
With greater awe among the men
among lions, guarding a valley in Tihama,
And another enemy and foe to it
إِذَاwhen ماever (emphatic) رَأىit sees قِرناًa rival مَدِلاًّself-assured هَوىit lunges لَهثpanting

which, seeing a self-assured rival, lunges at it panting,
May Allah not distance you if a disaster
bold against rivals, shaggy and savage,
Befell you from us, the house companion wandering
فَلَيسَso not بِمَسبَوقٍoutstripped بَشَيءِin anything أَرادَهُdesired it
وَلَيسَand not بِمَغلُوبٍvanquished وَلَيسَand not مُفادِياpaying ransom
never outstripped in anything it seeks,
But may Allah reward you, alive or dead,
never vanquished, never paying ransom,
In every state, the best of what He repays
بِأَعظَمَgreater مِنهُthan him فيamong الرِجالِmen مَهابَةًin awe

greater in the awe it inspires among men than he,
So nothing remains of that house and its people
and another, whether assailed or assailing.
Except the pleasures of nights and days, songs
فَلاَso may not يُبعِدَنكَbanish you اللَهُGod إِنif كانَthere is حادِثٌa misfortune

May God not cast you away, if some misfortune
If they come alive and generously with joy
befell you far from us, your dwelling remote and distant.
They resided with them until meeting misfortune
وَلكِنbut جَزاكَreward you اللَهُGod حَيَّاًalive وَهالِكاًand dead

عَلىin كُلِّevery حالٍstate خيرَthe best ماof what كانَHe is جازياgiving in recompense
But may God reward you, living and dead,
in every state, with the best He ever gives in recompense.
فَلَمso not يَبقَremained مِنof تِلكَthose الديارِdwellings وَأَهلِهاand their people

So nothing remained of those dwellings and their people,
through the journeying of night and days, except deserted dwelling-sites.

When the two come upon a noble tribe in prosperity,
they camp among them until the people encounter calamities.
