وَمِنand among أَيَّامِناour days يَومٌa day عَجِيبٌwondrous
شَهِدناهwe witnessed it بِأَقرِيَةِat the watercourses of الرِداعِal-Ridāʿ
And among our days was a wondrous day,
Among our days was a wondrous day
We witnessed it at the watercourses of al-Ridāʿ.
We witnessed it at Aqirat al-Rida'
فَلَمّاso when أَنthat (linking particle) تَلاَقَيناwe met one another ضُحَيّاًat midmorning
وَقَدand already جَعَلُواthey had placed المِصاعَthe sword-fighting عَلىupon الذِراعِthe forearm
So when we met one another at midmorning,
When we met at dawn
And they had laid swordplay upon the forearm,
And they had set the banners on the arms
هُماthe two of them فَتنَانِtwo trials (uncertain reading) مَقضِيٌّdecreed عليهِagainst him

They were two trials; doom was decreed against him
He is a seducer upon whom it was decreed
At that very hour, and so he announced his farewell.
That for his time he should bid farewell
