حَكَيتَyou emulated لَناfor us الصِدّيقَal-Siddiq (the truthful one) لَمّاwhen وَلِيتَناyou ruled us
وَعُثمانَand Uthman وَالفارُوقَand al-Faruq (the discerner) فاِرتاحَso he rejoiced مُعدِمُa destitute man
You mirrored al-Siddiq for us when you took charge of us,
You emulated al-Siddiq for us when you became our ruler,
and Uthman and al-Faruq; so the destitute found relief.
and Uthman and al-Faruq; so the destitute rejoiced.
وَسَوَّيتَand you made equal بينَamong النَّاسِthe people فيin الحَقِّjustice فَاِستَوَواso they became equal
فَعادَso it became صَباحاًmorning حالِكُpitch-black الليلِthe night مُظلِمُdark
You made the people equal in justice, and equal they became;
And you gave the people equal justice, so they stood as equals;
then the pitch-black darkness of night turned into morning.
so the pitch-black darkness of night turned to morning.

Abu Layla came to you, while a mount bore him through the darkness—
Abu Layla came to you, borne through the darkness—
through night’s deep gloom—a mighty camel, crosser of the wastes—
the darkness of night—by a large, sturdy camel, a rover of the desert,

that you might mend in him a side that had been shaken
so you might mend a part of him shattered
by the turns of the nights and by implacable Time.
by the vicissitudes of the nights and unrelenting time.
