هذا الجَليس الذي بُليتُ به

هذا الجَليس الذي بُليتُ به

أقسَم ألّا يُفارِقَ الصَلَفا

أقسَم ألّا يُفارِقَ الصَلَفا

This companion with whom I am afflicted

Has sworn never to abandon arrogance.

في كُل عِلمٍ يَخوض مُدَّعياً

في كُل عِلمٍ يَخوض مُدَّعياً

وهو جهولٌ بكُل ما عُرِفا

وهو جهولٌ بكُل ما عُرِفا

He plunges into every field of knowledge, claiming expertise,

Though utterly ignorant of all that is known.

أوضعُ خلق الإله كلِّهمُ

أوضعُ خلق الإله كلِّهمُ

وَيدّعى أنه من الشُرَفا

وَيدّعى أنه من الشُرَفا

The basest of all God's creatures,

Yet he claims to be among the noble.

الموتُ منه ومن ثَقالته

الموتُ منه ومن ثَقالته

أماتَه اللَه عاجلاً وكَفى

أماتَه اللَه عاجلاً وكَفى

Death comes from him and his tiresomeness;

May God kill him soon—and that will suffice.
