So it is as though our saddles were in a grassy hollow,
Our saddles were like tents pitched in a lush meadow,
at Unayzah's sandy bend, by the overflow of al-Turmus,
Near a valley of Unaizah with overflowing pools.

where lavender has mingled with arfaj shrubs.
Where partridges mingled together at evening,
A fire-seeker for his household comes to you, having found no firebrand.
Each cock goes to roost with his own hens.

And some clans pitched their sons' tents
Tribesmen camped in the homes of their sons,
on level ground, its watercourses with far-off heads.
Their tents guarded, with tent-poles like spearheads.

Then they grasped the saddle-forks, and away sped
They took hold of the straps of the saddle-bags and found
the black-bellied camels, like a hermit's trailing hem.
Little inside but crumbs in the depths.

They feigned sleep a little and said, “Halt for the night!”
They slept a while, then said, “We leave at dawn.”
Not in a whisper, and at no proper campsite.
Not bedded softly, uneasily lodged.

They would not buy, with a nap they had taken
Buying no sleep, the sleep that came to them
and the healing of their eyes, the immortality of Time.
Was medicine for their eyes and fixed their gaze.

Indeed, I preserve my people's honor undiminished;
I have turned my back on my fellow tribesmen.
indeed, by this nose, I am not to be held in contempt.
By this nose of mine, I shall not be led.
