إِنِّيindeed I لَأَعلَمُsurely know أَدواءَailments تَضَمّنهاhas harbored them
قَومٌa people أَحاطَhas encompassed بِهِمaround them علميmy knowledge وَماand not شَعَرواthey perceived
Indeed, I know the ailments harbored by
I know the maladies that some have endured,
A people whom my knowledge encompasses, though they are unaware.
Though surrounded by my knowledge, yet unaware.
لاnot أبليI wear away الدَّهرthroughout time ماwhat أَبلىexhausted جَوادَهُمtheir generous man
مِنَof البِناءِbuilding وَلاand not يَألونَthey hold back ماwhat عَقَرواthey slaughtered
I never wear away what exhausted their generous man,
I do not ruin forever what ruins their steeds
In building; nor do they stint in what they have slaughtered.
Of construction, nor do they cease from what they destroy.
وَلاand not تَرانيyou see me إِذاwhen لَمnot يَبتَغواthey seek حشميmy anger
كَخالفِlike a laggard الذُّلِّhumiliation إِذwhen يَسعىhe strives وَيَنْتَصِرُand seeks redress
Nor, when they do not seek to anger me, will you see me
You will not see me, if they do not seek my regard,
Like a laggard in humiliation, striving and seeking redress.
Like the contrarian's opposition when he strives and avenges.
وَلاand not تَدَرَّأتُI vaunted my power بِالدَّرءِwith protective strength الَّذيwhich قَبليat my disposal
عَلىover اِبنِthe son of عَمّيmy paternal uncle وَالمَولىand the kinsman لَهُfor him غِيَرُchanges of fortune
Nor have I vaunted the might at my command
Nor did I defend with the defense that came before me
Over my cousin; a kinsman has his changing fortunes.
Over the son of my uncle, though he has a master other than him.
وَقَدand indeed تبلطتI ran حيناfor a time مرسماstriding swiftly طَلقاunrestrained
تَرىyou see وَظيفيmy shank لَمnot يُجبرhas been mended بِهِin it أَثَرُan injury mark
And I have run for a time, swift-striding and unrestrained.
For a time I was clad in smooth flowing robes,
You see my shank, with no trace of a mended injury.
You can see my office was not constrained by it.
فَالمَرءُso the man أَعدَلُmore just وَالغازيand the raider بشكتهwith his weapons
لَهُfor him صَريعٌa fallen man مِنَfrom الصفينthe two battle lines مُنقَعِرُuprooted
For man is more just; and the raider, with his weapons,
So a man is more just, and the invader with his complaint,
Has a fallen man from the two battle lines, uprooted.
Has from the two hosts a pouring out that is severed.
