I saw—with Salmā's hills between me and them—

The tribe's laden camels ascending Malīʿ,

On upper Dhū al-Shamīṭ, on two of its rugged ridges,

Where its rough ground forms rib-like hills,

With the gaze of a blue-eyed hawk,

Upon a height, ranging over the hilltops.

Away with you, base men! Indeed I

Was dosed with honor through my nose.

I am al-Khuzamī; people leave me free

To ramble on, whether boastfully or eloquently.

I am the son of him who left Bishr al-Bakrī

With birds above him, watching him, ready to alight.

He smote him with a blow that roused by night

His mourning women, and cheapened dowries.

    تَرى لِوَجيفِها رَهجاً سَريعا

    And he led the horses back toward Kalb;

You see swift clouds of dust from their galloping.

And he left Mirfaq, while the horses galloped,

In al-ʿIrḍ's flood-channel, stripped and struck down,

    تَرى لِلحَى جَماجِمها نَبيعا

    At Wāqim's lava-field, while the pale camels held their necks askew;

You see sweat streaming from the jaws of their skulls.

    يُطارِقُ في دَوابِرِها الشَّسوعا

    And he returned across Dujūj with shod mounts;

He layers sandal-straps around their heels.

When they advanced in the midday heat, they flushed

From the shade a herd of wild cattle or a young ibex.

And if their foot-pads bled from wear,

They left boulders reddened by it, as if ripened.

Perhaps people take an evening draught of glory,

Of ours, or recall some worthy deed of ours.

And I made no close friend among them,

But I drove them all onward.

I bound their women among us of late,

Hoarding wealth and the child torn from his kin.

I did not strip them bare, nor did they hold back from me,

But the time has now come for me to desist.

I marvel at those who say 'Hush!' to a people

Whose eminence overtops the loftiest honor.
