آلَيتُI swore لاnot أُخفيI conceal إِذاwhen اللَّيلُthe night جَنَّنيenveloped me
سَناthe glow النَّارِof the fire عنfrom سارٍa night traveler وَلاnor مُتَنَوِّرِone seeking firelight
I swore not to hide, when night enveloped me,
the fire’s glow from a night traveler or one seeking its light.
فَياso, O مَوقِديyou two kindlers of ناريmy fire اِرفَعاهاraise it, you two لَعَلَّهاperhaps it
تُضيءُit shines لِسارٍfor a night traveler آخرَthe end of اللَّيلِthe night مُقترِimpoverished
So, you two who kindle my fire, raise it high, that it may
shine for an impoverished traveler at night’s end.
وَماذاand what عَلَيناupon us أَنthat يواجهhe approaches نارَناour fire
كَريمُnoble المُحَيّاthe face شاحِبُpale المُتَحَسِّرِthe exposed skin
And what harm is it to us if our fire is approached by
a noble-faced man, his exposed skin pale?
إِذاwhen قالَhe said مَنwho أَنتُمyou (plural) لِيَعرِفَso he may learn أَهلَهاits people
رَفَعتُI raised my voice لَهُto him بِاِسميwith my name وَلَمand did not أَتَنَكَّرِdisguise myself
When he asked, ‘Who are you?’ to learn its keepers,
I called out my name to him and did not hide who I was.
وَقُلتُand I said أَشيعاshare freely, you two مَشِّراserve out, you two القِدرthe cooking pot حَولناaround us
وأَيُّand what زَمانٍtime قَدرُناour pot لَمnot تمشّرِbe served out
And I said, ‘Share freely, you two; serve the pot’s contents around us!’
And when has our pot ever not been shared?
فَبِتناso we spent the night بِخَيرِin well-being مِنthrough كَرامَةِhonoring ضَيفِناour guest
وَبِتْناand we spent the night نُهَدِّيgiving as gifts طعمَةًfood غَيرَnot from مَيسرِgambling
So we passed the night well, through honoring our guest,
and spent the night giving food as gifts, not won through gambling.
فَأَجلَينَthen they scattered عَنfrom بَرقٍa flash أَضاءَilluminated عَقيرَةًa slaughtered she-camel
فَياthen, oh لَكَfor you ذُعراًa fright أَيّwhat a ساعَةmoment مَذعرِterror
Then they scattered from a flash that lit a slaughtered she-camel—
oh, what a fright—what a moment of terror!
