By your life, I do indeed love Najd,

yet I see no path to Najd.

And I had thought the sweetness of Najd's soil

and a life at al-Tarifah would never fade.

Will you truly see al-Ahfar one day,

or the plainly visible people encamped there,

or the boys who have settled in its grounds,

or the fair-faced, highborn men of mature years?

    وَإِنْ نَطَقوا سَمِعْتَ لَهُمْ عُقولا

    When they are silent, you see their beauty;

and if they speak, you hear their wisdom.

Will you truly see at Thu'aylibat,

or at Bidan, a fleet, ambling she-camel,

or catch up, with the sun soft at dusk,

with laden camels in one of the valley's tributaries?

Is this captivity truly your doing, Hariz,

with neither a journey upland from you nor a return?

When I slumber at Tuma's monastery, there cry

doves that make the night grow longer.

Whenever they cry, I say, 'I sense the dawn,'

yet they have left me a heavy night.

    إِذا حُشِيت سَمِعتَ لَها أَليلا

    They draw near, each like a she-camel with a calfskin dummy;

when it is stuffed, you hear her plaintive moan.

So if they crossed the land breadthwise—

but their crossing of the land is lengthwise—

they would rend their collars for love of me,

    and prepare dirges and wailing.

My two friends, sit with me and comfort me,

and steady my pillow for me, lest it tilt.
