Then he spoke, dealing death amid a dense, swaying host,

Lances skimming low in its midst and rising aloft.

And how many of a clan's noblest we left,

    Wailing over their fathers!

On sleek steeds champing their bits, as though they

Were ibexes when stepping nimbly with mailed warriors.

On every spirited steed that, when its ardor is checked,

    Swings—full-flanked and strong-footed—

Its bowed legs before the eyes, as though they were

Unstrung bows in the hands of those who bend them.

So the earth has a dust cloud from their tracks,

And the pass rings with their neighing.

In Najd I held by force whatever I desired,

And in the Ghawr mine is proud, towering might.
