Am I a captive stranger or a prince in her land,

While enemies surround me—her adversaries standing firm?

O two mountains of Nuʿman, by God, leave open

The east wind's path, so its breeze may reach me.

So I may feel its coolness, or it may cure the yearning within me,

Upon a liver whose innermost core alone remains.

For the east wind is a wind that, whenever it blows gently

Upon a troubled soul, its cares are dispelled.

Yet indeed, my passions for Layla are longstanding,

And the deadliest of men's passions is the oldest.
