إِذا هِيَ خَرَّت خَرَّ مِنْ عَنْ يَمينِها
شعيبٌa waterskin بِهِthrough it إِجمامُهاher rest وَلُغوبِهاand her weariness
شعيبٌ بِهِ إِجمامُها وَلُغوبِها
When she falls, the one at her right falls too—
Whenever she sank down, down fell from beside her right side
Shuʿayb, through whom come both her repose and her fatigue.
A waterskin, on which her rest and weariness depend.
يدينit yields لمزرورٍto a fastened cord إِلىat جَنبِthe side of حَلقَةٍa ring
يدين لمزرورٍ إِلى جَنبِ حَلقَةٍ
مِنَof الشبهِbrass سواهاshaped it بِرفقwith care طَبيبُهاher skilled craftsman
مِنَ الشبهِ سواها بِرفق طَبيبُها
He yields to a riveted fastener beside a ring
It yields to a fastened cord beside a ring
of brass, which her skilled craftsman joined by soldering.
Of brass, shaped with care by her skilled craftsman.
كَأَنَّas though لَدىbeside مَيسورِهاher left side مَتنَthe back of حَيَّةٍa serpent
كَأَنَّ لَدى مَيسورِها مَتنَ حَيَّةٍ
تحركstirred مشواهاits extremities وَماتَand died ضَريبُهاits counterpart
تحرك مشواها وَماتَ ضَريبُها
It is as though along her left side lies a serpent’s back;
As though beside her left side lay a serpent's back,
her moving limb stirred, while its mate lay dead still.
Its extremities stirring, while its counterpart lay dead.
فَأَلقىthen he tossed إِلَيهاto her دِرهَمَينِtwo dirhams وَقَلَّصَتand she sped off
فَأَلقى إِلَيها دِرهَمَينِ وَقَلَّصَت
بِهِwith him ضامِرُlean الكَشحَينِboth flanks لدنsupple عَسيبُهاher tailbone
بِهِ ضامِرُ الكَشحَينِ لدن عَسيبُها
He tossed her two dirhams, and she sped away,
Then he tossed her two dirhams, and she sped off
bearing him—lean in both flanks, the shaft of her tail supple—

كَماjust as لاحَgleamed تبرٌuncoined gold فيin يَدٍa hand لَمَعَتْshone بِهِwith it

كعابٌa budding-breasted maiden بَداappeared أَسوارُهاher bracelet وَخَضيبُهاand her henna-stained hand
كعابٌ بَدا أَسوارُها وَخَضيبُها
as uncoined gold glints in a hand, flashed
As raw gold gleamed in a hand, shining with it was
by a young maiden, her bracelet and hennaed hand revealed.
A budding-breasted maiden, her bracelet and henna-stained hand revealed.
