وَلَوand if كُنتَyou were ذاpossessing عَقلٍreason رَجَحتَyou would have been level-headed وَلَمand not تَكُنyou would be
لِتَبطَرَfor you to grow insolent بِالنَعماthrough prosperity وَلَوand even if نِلتَyou attained مَرْغَباsomething desired
And had you possessed reason, you would have been level-headed and would not
Had you been wise, you would have refrained, and not
have grown insolent in prosperity, even had you won what you desired.
Reveled in fortune, even if you attained your wish.
فَياso, O غَضّtender نَبتٍa shoot حَرَّكتهُstirred it مِنَfrom الصّباthe east wind

So, O tender shoot, stirred by an easterly
So cease being a sapling swayed by the morning breeze,
puff of wind, then bending and swaying!
Wavering at every puff of wind.
مَتىwhen كُنتُI was عَدلَthe equal of الطودِthe mountain مِنfrom آلِthe house of مالِكٍMalik
وَهَلand can ضَرعٌa weakling شَختٌscrawny يُعادِلُmatch أَغلَباa thick-necked lion
When was I a match for the mountain of Malik's house?
When was I ever crooked like the branch of Malik’s family?
And can a scrawny weakling match a thick-necked lion?
Can a withered udder equal one that's full?
