وانكand that you منamong رؤوسchiefs الهاشميناthe Hashemites
O Abu al-ʿAssāf, my people's excellence has deceived you,
Abu Al-Asaff, your people's virtue has deceived you,
and your being among the chiefs of the Hashemites,
And you are one of the eminent Hashimites,
وانكand that you لاnot تخافyou fear ولاand not تجاريyou are rivaled
ولاand not تلقىyou encounter بماfor what قدمتyou have done هوناhumiliation
and that you fear nothing and are unrivaled,
And you neither fear nor compete,
and suffer no humiliation for what you have done.
Nor regard what you have presented as disgrace.
اليكback with you! اليكback with you! عرضكyour honor عنfrom شداتيmy assaults

Back, back—keep your honor away from my assaults,
To you, to you, turn your cheek from my calamities,
lest I stain that guarded ancestral honor.
Lest I imprint on the protected lineage,
وأقسمand I swear إنif رملتI compose اليكto you بيتاa verse

And I swear, if I compose a verse addressed to you,
And I swear if I recited a verse to you,
your spear-shaft will surely be put to the test—or bend.
Your temples would frown or soften.
