لا رمت يعرب بسهم شديد

بعد زيد اخي الفعال الحميد

بعد زيد اخي الفعال الحميد

May Yaʿrub never be struck by an arrow so grievous

May Ya'rub loose no mighty arrow

after Zayd, lord of praiseworthy deeds—

After Zayd, brother of praiseworthy deeds,

خير خولان بل قضاعة بل حمير

خير خولان بل قضاعة بل حمير

بل قحطن الشريف بن هود

بل قحطن الشريف بن هود

the best of Khawlān—nay, of Quḍāʿa—nay, of Ḥimyar—

The best of Khawlan—nay, of Quda'ah, nay, of Himyar,

nay, of noble Qaḥṭān, son of Hūd.

Nay, of noble Qahtan, son of Hud.

فانعياه بكل ملك عظيم

فانعياه بكل ملك عظيم

يرحم الله خير ميتٍ ومودي

يرحم الله خير ميتٍ ومودي

Then you two proclaim his death to every mighty king;

So, you two, lament him with every mighty king.

may God have mercy on the best of all who have died and gone.

May God have mercy on the best of the dead and departed.

عقمت بعد هلكه رحم الأرض

عقمت بعد هلكه رحم الأرض

فليست لمثله بولود

فليست لمثله بولود

After his death, the earth’s womb grew barren,

The earth's womb became barren after his death,

and shall never bear another like him.

So it cannot bear another like him.
