When the swords of the brave Bani Qahtan
Qahtan, when its lowly followers transgressed,
Flashed brightly in battle's tumultuous day,

at the foot of Qaran or on the heights of Gharaq,
On the plain of Qaran or Rabya's steep,
in the days when the wars’ wood-gatherer kindled them—
In the glorious wars of olden day;

Ali ibn Fadl—and [unclear fragment] he encircled us
When Ali Ibn Fadhl led his mail-clad bands,
with a force whose battalions were like young locusts—
Like lions gleaming through the dark array,

And woke the memory of deeds we wrought,
and of their cutting edges striking their teeth.

If he seeks them, they are indeed upon our shoulders,
Should foemen seek us, ready we await,
lying in wait for whoever watches them.
With watchful eyes and weapons sharp as they.
