وَطارَت بِهِ في الجَوِّ عَنقاءُ مُغرِبُ
As though ʿUqayl, in the morning light, had been borne aloft
As if at dawn, Uqail was carried off
and carried through the sky by the far-flying ʿAnqāʾ.
And flown away into the western sky by a vulture

And a noble man calls to you, O clan of ʿĀmir,
By one so generous, who calls on you, O clan of Amir
on a battlefield, his tunic dripping.
With his cloak dripping blood in the fray

ʿĀmir saw the swords' blows, and they abandoned
Amir saw the swords fall and they surrendered
their brother; no fearsome steed wheeled back.
Their brother, as no terrifying horse shied away

And ʿĀmir yielded when he saw death;
And when Amir saw death, he submitted
he had a hump-backed mount above the spearheads.
With a steed above the spear-points, humpbacked

Whenever the tips of our spears overshadowed him,
When our forest of spears shades him
a swift, stout-limbed steed plunged down with him.
The necklace of his victim hangs over him, dripping

On its two haunches were keen blades, as though they were
On his shoulder-blades, like swooping eagles
a vulture's foremost wing-feathers, their shoulder stripped away.
Whose shoulders gleam, preening over their prey
