O Naji, I do not think you will escape,
I complain that I do not find you a confidant,
Nor elude me, save as a saddle-sore mount.
Nor a horseman except one who has stumbled.

O Naji, the ignoble have been counted; I see none
I complain that the wicked have returned, so I do not see
Among men lower or baser than your father.
Among the people anyone lower than your father.

[You wished] to revile us and be left alone;
You decided to insult us and leave
I shake Saʿsaʿ for his bewildering folly.
A clattering bell for the misguided clatterer.

مصحاً ولكني أرى مترفعا
The satirists have not left me, in your hide,
And the slanderers have left me no blemish
A sound spot; yet I see room to rise higher.
In your hides, but I see myself elevated.
