ولست بمفراح إذا الدهر سرني

I am not overjoyed when fortune pleases me,

I am not overjoyed when fortune smiles on me,

Nor dismayed by its ever-changing turns.

Nor downcast at the turns of its inconstancy.

ولا أتمنى الشر والشر تاركي

ولا أتمنى الشر والشر تاركي

ولكن متى أحمل على الشر أركب

ولكن متى أحمل على الشر أركب

Nor do I seek evil while evil leaves me alone;

I wish not for harm, though from harm I turn aside,

But whenever I am driven to evil, I ride into it.

Yet when harm is destined, mount up I must and ride.

ويعتده قوم كثير تجارة

ويعتده قوم كثير تجارة

ويمنعني من ذلك ديني ومنصبي

ويمنعني من ذلك ديني ومنصبي

And many people reckon it a trade,

Many men count it lawful gain and merchandise,

But my faith and lineage keep me from that.

But my religion and office bar me from the like.

فأن مسيري في البلاد ومنزلي

فأن مسيري في البلاد ومنزلي

لبا لمنزل الأقصى إذا لم أقرب

لبا لمنزل الأقصى إذا لم أقرب

For my course through the lands and my dwelling

So over lands near and far my journey lies,

Lie at the farthest abode, if I am not brought near.

With Mecca's distant shrine my journey's end and prize.
