سائل سليطاً إذ ما الحرب أفزعها
ماwhat بالcondition خيلكمyour horses قمساًbowed low هواديهاtheir necks
ما بال خيلكم قمساً هواديها
Ask Sulayt, when war has terrified them:
A bold inquirer asks what frightens war,
What ails your horses, their necks bowed low?
Why do your horses not raise up its valleys,
لاnot يرفعونthey raise إلىtoward داعa caller أعنتهاtheir reins
لا يرفعون إلى داع أعنتها
وفيand in جواشنهاtheir chests داءa sickness يجافيهاkeeps them back
وفي جواشنها داء يجافيها
They do not raise their reins in answer to a caller,
They do not heed the call for aid,
And a sickness in their chests keeps them back.
In their chests lies an illness that defies it.
